World Championship Barbecue Cooking Contest
May 15 - May 17, 2008
Memphis, Tennessee, USA |
 |
|
|
|
It’s Super Bowl, Mardi Gras and one bodacious party all rolled into one. Don’t miss it!
Each May in Memphis, Tennessee, on the banks of the Mississippi River, a magical transformation occurs. Tom Lee Park fills with barbecue enthusiasts, people who have worked all year to hone their skills and practice their art. They gather to compete with fellow grill-masters for the title of World Champion.
This three-day competition is now in its 29th year. It attracts the best of the best. Teams gather from around the world to show off their skills in producing the perfect ribs, shoulder and whole hog. Other competition cooking categories include sauce, "anything but" (pork); in which teams cook beef, seafood, poultry and "exotic" meats. Many teams have competed in the Memphis in May Sanctioned Contest Network, winning contests throughout the year to gain entry to the Championship.
And if that isn’t enough, there’s also world-class entertainment.
Teams compete in skits in the outrageous Ms. Piggie competitions, where grown men and women strut their stuff in way-out costumes. Awards are given for best booth and for the most creative T-shirts, as well.
The championship has attracted media from around the globe, and has been featured by Food Network, Southern Living, PBS and Food and Wine Magazine to name a few.
Please join us May 18 to 20, 2006 as we celebrate all that’s great about pork barbecue. Its one heck of a party!

You may find gourmet foods, organic meats next to fruits and vegetables, or perhaps dried floral arrangements and fragrances candles next to lovely perennials or cut flowers.
You might also find hand crafted jewelry, artwork, pottery, handcrafted cards, fresh cheeses and bread…or a nun selling pastries.
The possibilities are endless.

- About Pride Houston -
Pride Houston, a 501(c)(3) organization, is dedicated to celebrating individual gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender Pride, commemorating our community's history, and celebrating who we are as a people. The organization sponsors a number of cultural, social, and civic events throughout the year which lead up to Pride Month in June and culminate with the annual Pride Festival and Parade.
The organization offers a wide variety of events and sponsorship opportunities that provide the best way to reach the GLBT community in Houston and beyond.
- Event Overview -
The Houston Pride Festival and Parade is a family-friendly celebration of Houston's large and diverse gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered communities. This annual event, the largest Gay Pride in the Southwest, draws 50,000+ participants from around the state, region, and country for a full day of educational, commemorative, and celebratory activities. The Festival runs from 2 pm to 8 pm, and the nightime Parade kicks off at 8:45 pm.
- The 2007 Houston Pride Festival -
There’s only one place to be on the afternoon of Pride Day—the 2007 Houston Pride Festival! Come on out June 23rd from 2 pm - 8 pm and celebrate the GLBT community as Pride Houston throws a fun-filled street carnival in the heart of Montrose.
The 2006 Pride Festival blew away all expectations for attendance. As a result, this year’s festival will be even bigger and will include even more food, more activities, more places to cool off and relax with friends, and more entertainment than ever before.
The festival is more than a party, though. It’s also a place to learn about our history and discover those organizations that are working to make our community better. This year’s festival will include an exhibit of artifacts from the history of the GLBT rights movement, as well as pavilions showcasing over 125 local businesses and non-profits that support our community. Stop by to learn, shop, and get involved.
- The 2007 Houston Pride Parade -
Whether you are one of the 1000+ participants or one of the 50,000+ attendees, there is nothing quite like the exhilaration of Houston's annual Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual & Transgender Pride Parade. As America's original *nighttime* Pride Parade, it holds a unique place in the hearts of Houstonians and the many visitors who come to the Parade from throughout Texas and Louisiana and from other parts of the country.
The Parade is a thrill for spectators all the way down Westheimer from Woodhead to Whitney. Throughout the route, the Parade is an empowering blend of light, color and sound with beautiful illuminated floats, costumes and performances. Its Mardi Gras heritage is evident in the traditional throwing of beads and trinkets to attendees. Be sure to join us for the 29th annual Houston Pride Parade on June 23, 2007.

Tanghetto: electrotango
Tanghetto is an argentine band led by Max Masri (synths and programming) and Diego S. Velázquez (guitars) formed in 2001. The name "Tanghetto" (the combination of the words "tango" and "ghetto") was inspired by the "little argentinas", the communities of exiled argentines living overseas.
In the mid 90s, Max Masri (in his teens he was one of the last disciples of the legendary tango maestro Virgilio Expósito) went back to Buenos Aires from Germany after sharing interesting experiences with argentine emigrants and, because of that, brought the idea to create a new musical language, blending tango with modern sounds.
In late 1998 he started working with Diego S. Velázquez and they began recording and producing their first electrotango tracks. In 2001 this idea was revived, with a modern sound, their own compositions and, finally, a name for the project: Tanghetto.
The current line-up includes Federico Vázquez (bandoneón), Antonio Boyadjian (piano) and Daniel Corrado (drums).
See website for Tanghetto's recent history
