Maccabee means "hammer" in Hebrew.

One may not use the Menorah candles as a source of heat or light, though it is acceptable to use the shamash for light and warmth.

Though gambling is traditionally frowned upon by Jews, the betting of candy and coins during Hanukkah is the exception to the rule.

Performing household labor or chores is not allowed during the first half hour after the menorah candles are lit; during this time people sing, tell stories and play games.

Hanukkah Menorah Lighting

Join us as we celebrate Chanuka by erecting a 9 foot steel Menorah at the Rotary. We are having a public lighting ceremony and celebration, with music, dancing, and traditional chanukah refreshments: Latkes and Sufganiyot (jelly doughnuts). The event will be attended by Town Selectmen and other dignitaries. Everyone is invited to attend and share in the celebration. Draydels and chocolate chanukah gelt will be distributed to the children.
