Though technically, Eid al-Fitr is one day, Eid festivities usually last three days in Egypt with vacations for schools, universities and government offices. Some stores and restaurants are closed during Eid, too. Children go to amusement parks or to local schoolyards where they are entertained by puppeteers, storytellers, musicians or magic shows. Families gather for picnics, felucca rides on the Nile, and family reunions.

Nation Wide, Egypt

The holy month in Islam is a time of fasting, blessings and prayers. The last ten days of Ramadan are call I'tkaf. It is practiced in many ways and participants usually make extra sacrifices, take time off from work and go on a retreat.

Some of Egypt's Ramadan traditions are different from those of other Muslim nations. Working hours are shortened to allow more time for prayers. People usually go to sleep very late, sometimes at dawn. In the 16th century, a government tradition was established, announcing the "azan" or call to prayers by firing a cannon the Cairo Citadel over "el-Moqattam" mount.

Ramadan is a month of great joy, especially for kids. Every kid gets a "fanoos" or lantern, traditionally made of tin and colored glass, with a candle inside. These and other colored lights brighten mosques and streets throughout Ramadan. Children traditionally played and sang in the streets with their brightly colored lanterns. You will still find this in poorer neighborhoods and in rural areas.

Ramadan is also the time when Egyptian television series premier for the season because families tend to spend a lot of time together at home, frequently watching TV and drinking a traditional apricot drink called "qamar el-deen".

Many hotels put up tents and offer musical entertainment through the evening. Other clubs organize local amateur sporting tournaments.

Many Egyptian Christians will share in the traditions of Ramadan as a sign of respect and solidarity with their Muslim countrymen.

October 05 - November 04, 2005
Nationwide, Turkey

Ramadan (Ramazan in Turkish) is the ninth month of the lunar Islamic calendar, and is the month in which the Koran was revealed to Muhammad by the angel Gabriel. All month long practicing Muslims abstain from eating, smoking, drinking, and having sex from sunrise to sundown. It's not a good time to be nitpicky or get one anyone's nerves, as most folks are suffering from nicotine withdrawal and exhaustion.

In towns throughout Turkey, young boys go about with drums at agonizingly early hours of the morning, waking everyone while it's still dark outside so that they can fit in a meal before sunrise. Dinners during the month tend to be especially festive, continuing long into the night and consisting of lavish traditional meals.
