The International Children's Festival began in 2001 with the idea to present the best performing arts the world has to offer to the children of Minnesota and the region regardless of socioeconomic backgrounds. As an extension of Ordway Center’s Education Program, the goal was to not only introduce children to the world of the performing arts, but to also introduce them to the world in general. The Festival provides children, ages 4 and up, an unparalleled opportunity for a cross-cultural arts experience, to promote the use of arts for discovery of human commonalities as well as celebrating and respecting cultural differences. Five years later Ordway Center’s International Children's Festival has served over 166,000 patrons during the weeklong event and has been named as one of the region’s top ten festivals by the Minnesota Office of Tourism.
During the Festival Family Weekend of May 31- June 1, the international artists perform to family audiences, with accessible ticket prices to performances ranging only from $11-$17. In addition to the performances inside Ordway Center, a true international World Party takes place outside in Rice Park and the adjacent Landmark Plaza. The World Party offers free hands-on art making and education activities hosted by the Festival Sponsors and Education Partners. In 2007 Education Partners represented 31 arts and cultural institutions headquartered in the Twin Cities. Some partners included Minnesota Children’s Museum, Saint Paul Public Library, Science Museum of Minnesota, and SteppingStone Theatre. The World Party features free performances by local artists on three outdoor stages and around the Festival grounds. The roster of artists is a cross section of the international diversity of people that call Minnesota home. An international food court of local vendors is also available. The World Party is a free celebration for everyone!
