Description:
In 1905, Vincenzo Floria, the car-loving son of a prominent Sicilian mercantile family, established a great road event. The prize for each winner was a plate featuring the Florio family emblem. In Italian, the word for “plate” is “targa”, so the event was named the Targa Florio. For 69 years, the Targa Florio demanded the highest road-racing and rally skills around a narrow, twisting mountain roads of Sicily.
The traditions of this great classic have been recreated in an exciting competition called Targa Tasmania.
In 1992, a dream came alive for motoring enthusiasts across the world. The inaugural year of the event in the Australian island State of Tasmania, bringing together a collection of sporting automobiles spanning the 20th Century and worth collectively many millions of dollars. The competition teams are given the opportunity to drive their cars on some of the most challenging roads in the world, competing over six days and more than 2000 kilometres, 500 of which are closed road, competition Targa Stages. The event delights competitors for the standard of roads, and thrills spectators for the extravaganza of magnificent cars spread before them.
Targa Tasmania brings together the greatness of classics such as the Targa Florio, the Mille Miglia, the Coup des Alpes, with a field of around 300 Sports, Classic and GT from all era’s. Each car or team competing in one of four competitions - Historic, Touring Classic, Classic and Modern - and for the enthusiast’s who don’t want to test their machine at speed, there’s a special touring rally that follows the course with the competition.
