Bill Monroe Memorial Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival
June 14 - June 21, 2008
Bean Blossom, Indiana, USA |
"The Mecca of bluegrass music and home of the oldest, continuous running bluegrass festival in the world!"
The late great Bill Monroe founded this festival in 1966 as a way to bring his buddies together to play that high lonesome sound he pioneered. Now Celebrating its' 40th Anniversary, the oldest bluegrass festival in the world keeps his memory bright through eight days of the very best bluegrass and country music have to offer.
Always boasting the top talents in this genre, the event attracks pickers and grinners (as well as plain old bluegrass lovers) from around the country. While the hillbilly music tradition goes back hundreds of years, it was Monroe, a high-mountain tenor and mandolin player extraordinaire, who made bluegrass into a unique musical form. It's this music that is celebrated all week through the intricate, quick-tempo instrumental and vocal harmonies of small groups of virtuoso musicians.
Since bluegrass is an art form that attracks participants as well as listeners, you just might find as much entertainment in the campground as up on stage. Also featured at the fest are workshops and competitions. Festival organizers invite their guests to visit Uncle Pen's Cabin, the spot where Monroe spent his early years. And a Walkway of Stars paves the entry to a museum with Hollywood-style bronze stars for the bluegrass greats. Stop by to learn about the story of bluegrass beginnings and to enjoy the Bluegrass Hall of Fame, which includes innovators like Lester Flatt and Earl Scrugs.

Escape the hustle and bustle of city life with a relaxing getaway to Villa Christina’s secluded gardens and enjoy live jazz performances at the 5th Annual Summer Jazz Series at Villa Christina. Adam Ghali, General Manager of Villa Christina, was delighted by the huge success of the past four jazz concert series. “We love hosting the outdoor jazz concerts here. The series is a relaxing and festive way to spend time with family and friends, enjoying live jazz and delicious food and refreshing beverages outdoors. The outstanding entertainment combined with a gorgeous outdoor setting and incredible food is a temptation too strong to resist!”
Four complimentary outdoor concerts will be performed at Villa Christina on select Sundays throughout the summer. Kicking off the series on Sunday, June 22nd is world-renowned trumpeter, Joey Sommerville, whose newest CD, “Like You Mean it” is burning up the charts. Newport Music Festival
July 11 - July 27, 2008
Newport, Rhode Island, USA |
Established by the New York Metropolitan Opera in 1969, the Newport Music Festival presents chamber music in the famous Newport Mansions. Millionaires lend their neo-classical and baroque summer mansions to a cultural cause, as Newport presents more than 67 classical concerts in their ballrooms and on their lawns. Some 60-plus international artists play in such venues as The Great Hall of The Breakers, constructed in 1895 by Cornelius Vanderbilt in the style of a 16th century Italian Palace.
The purpose of chamber music was to give life to rooms like those at Newport, and chamber music is indeed the focus, although the musical selection runs the classical gamut. The selection process is made by general director Dr. Mark P. Malkovich III, who chooses from the 19th century chamber and vocal repertoire, along with some Romantic-era piano literature. Composers such as Schubert, Brahms or Tchaikovsky are featured in afternoon retrospective concerts.
The Festival celebrates its 40th season in 2008, with more than 60 classical musicians from around the world performing in these most gracious settings.
