Satchmo SummerFestNew Orleans, Louisiana, USA
8/5/2010 - 8/8/2010
DescriptionDiscover What a Wonderful World you’ll find at Satchmo SummerFest – New Orleans’ newest festival favorite – a unique, annual birthday salute to native son Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong. Armstrong’s musical legacy and cultural contributions have long been praised internationally, and Satchmo SummerFest celebrates the Satchmo spirit with the only annual Armstrong festival held in the United States. The multiple-day event surrounds the weekend of Armstrong’s real birthday of August 4 with a whirlwind of festivities. (For years, it was thought that his birthday was on July 4th, until a jazz scholar recently discovered Armstrong’s birth certificate.)
The Fourth annual free festival includes centerpiece activities scheduled for August 7 - 10, 2005. From educational and entertaining seminars by jazz enthusiasts and Armstrong colleagues, to free modern and traditional jazz concerts on multiple outdoor stages, Satchmo SummerFest is the type of lively birthday party that only New Orleans can arrange.
Taking place in the world-famous French Quarter and various other locations throughout New Orleans, Satchmo SummerFest is the ultimate tribute to the “International Ambassador of Jazz,” in the birthplace of jazz. Originally designed as a one-time tribute for Armstrong’s centennial birthday in 2001, the event’s success prompted organizers to make it an annual event. Make plans now to enjoy everything Satchmo SummerFest 2005 has to offer—plenty of great music, edu-taining sessions, delicious Crescent City cuisine, colorful art exhibits, a Satchmo Club Strut, hands-on children’s activities, a rousing Jazz Mass, authentic second-line street parade and much more jazz-filled summertime fun.
