The rice festival begins some time after the Thai New Year, or Songkran, with the eagerly awaited Rocket Festival. Homemade rockets reaching up to several metres in length are paraded around Um Chan village in a colourful festival, before owners the compete to see whose rocket will reach the greatest height when fired. It is believed the rockets encourage the rain to fall for the new rice planting season, as they are an invocation to the rain spirits.
