Johnny Cash Flower Pickin' Festival
Johnny Cash Flower Pickin' Festival
Starkville , Mississippi, USA
Mid October
Not everyone was thrown in the Starkville City Jail for pickin’ flowers in 1965, but it happened to Johnny Cash. Featured in The New York Times in 2008, this continues Johnny Cash's spirit of music, songwriting, fun and living live life on your own terms. Starkville made such an impression on the Man in Black that he wrote a song about his experience in the small Mississippi city. More than 40 years after the experience, Starkville continues to honor Cash’s life and history with the city with the annual Johnny Cash Flower Pickin’ Festival. Cash wrote the song, “Starkville City Jail,” and performed it at San Quentin State Prison on Feb. 24, 1969. Starkville appreciates the depth and humanity of the Man in Black and his spirit of redemption and charity. Events related to the festival include jail tours, a songwriting competition, a 5K race, guest speakers, art exhibitions, food and vendors, outdoor music, films, and a symbolic pardoning. As an annual staple in the festival, The city of Starkville issues posthumous, symbolic pardons on Cash’s behalf to culminate the weekend-long events. Friends and family associated with the festival include: Rosanne Cash, Kathy Cash, Joanne Cash, Marshall Grant, Jimmy Tittle, Marty Stuart, Billy Joe Shaver, Alan Messer, Lou Robin and many more. Endorsed by the John R. Cash Revocable Trust and family, the festival pays a colorful tribute to Johnny Cash and those throughout the world in need of redemption. Come join us in Starkville to participate in redemption, the spirit of Johnny Cash and a little flower pickin’. Disclaimer: Oktibbeha County Sheriff Dolph Bryan warns festival attendees to enjoy themselves but not to get out of hand. “We put Johnny Cash in the Starkville City Jail and can put you in there if you don’t watch it.”
Along with musicians, speakers, and other special guests ranging from Johnny Cash's friends, family and authors will gather on the streets of Starkille to pay tribute to the Man in Black while having a heck of a time. Previous performers include Rosanne Cash, Marty Stuart, Billy Joe Shaver, Jimmy Tittle and New Jersey-based tribute band, Ring of Fire.
