The 30th Door Village Harvest Festival will be held on Saturday, September 7, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Central and Sunday, September 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Central at Scipio Township Park, 3501 W. Joliet Road, in historic Door Village. There is No Admission charge to attend the festival, however parking is $3 per vehicle and any donations will be greatly appreciated. All proceeds from the festival will go to benefit the Scipio Township Park.
Saturday morning will have a patriotic opening ceremony at 8:30 a.m. Central and the annual Pancake & French Toast Breakfast from 7:30 to 10 a.m. Central which is Free to all Veterans (compliments of Mayor Tom Dermody).
Both Saturday and Sunday a variety of foods will also be available from local vendors at the Food Court as well as the delicious homemade baked goods from the popular Country Bake Shop. There will also be old-fashioned Ham and Beans as well as Chicken and Noodles on Sunday from 11 a.m. CDT until gone.
Many of the favorite features of the festival will be returning. A large variety of Craft Vendors will be a highlight for all who enjoy shopping for quality crafts and other products. Grandma’s Parlor will feature demonstrations spinning and quilting while Grandpa’s Woodshed will demonstrate wood carving and
wood working. Grandpa’s Barnyard will include a variety of farm animals to delight children of all ages.
The Children’s Area will have a Petting Zoo, a variety of old-fashioned children’s games with prizes, and for a small donation kids can ride the miniature Door Village Air Line Railroad. People of all ages will enjoy walking through the Pioneer Village encampment of 1832 and the Civil War Camp with reenactors dressed in period clothes as they share stories and demonstrate artifacts commonly used during those historic times.
The Four A’s Car Club Auto Show will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Central Saturday and Sunday and will include the Sunday Farmer Tractors.
A wide variety of entertainment will be featured on the Festival Stage during the weekend including musicians For Pete’s Sake and Johnny V. The popular Horse and Wagon Tours of Door Village History driven by Tammy Heinen and her handsome horses and narrated by La Porte County Historian Bruce Johnson will continue on Saturday and Sunday for a small donation. Learn fascinating facts about Historic Door Village including the early settlers, the
1832 Fort of the Blackhawk War, Parkinson’s La Porte-Valparaiso Stage Coach, the New York/Chicago Electric Air Line Railroad, and local families, homes, and businesses of the past and present.
Saturday and Sunday at 1 p.m. and 3 p.PM will be the Living Cemetery Tour when actors portray
people who are buried in the 1834 Door Village Cemetery. At their gravestones, citizens from the past
will share interesting stories of their lives from different eras in history.
