40th ANNUAL WATERFORD CANAL FESTIVAL
Festival Details - "40th ANNUAL WATERFORD CANAL FESTIVAL"...
Start: Saturday, May 16, 2026 10:00AM
End: Saturday, May 16, 2026 6:00PM
Did you know that the Erie Canal that you read about in your school history books is local?! That's right! It's here in the Village of Waterford at the confluence of the Mohawk and Hudson Rivers! Come down to the river to see the locks in action at this year's 40th Annual Waterford Canal Festival.
It is beyond a celebration! The Festival is intended to preserve our local history and pride, as it draws thousands of residents and visitors to our historic Village of Waterford waterfront. Join the many locals, tourists and water travelers as they await their entry into the canal lock system on their travels. It's an impressive experience.
This event also serves as an important economic and cultural driver for the Village, as we showcase and support our local businesses, retailers, artisans, musicians and food vendors with foot traffic and overnight tourists. The festival provides an excellent opportunity to explore the Waterford Canal System’s rich history and enjoy a fun-filled day with family and friends.
Last year’s Canal Experience was highlighted by the observance of its Bicentennial year. But perhaps the most significant and memorable of its many events will be this year, as the Buffalo Maritime Center's construction of the Seneca Chief, a historic replica of the first canalboat to navigate the Erie Canal from Buffalo to New York City, will be available for tours. The Seneca Chief completed the trip of its namesake, and is spending the Winter in Waterford. It is expected it will make its return trip to Buffalo when the canal opens this year. The Seneca Chief will be on display and available for boarding and interpretation both Friday during the opening of the Canal on May 15, and Saturday, May 16 during the Festival. It is exciting to be able to go back in time to experience the history that is Waterford!
Your attendance has and will directly support and sustain FREE family-centered programs and entertainment, such as LIVE MUSIC, historical tours, kayaking; as well as our FREE children’s programs, obstacle course, treasure hunt, face painting, bounce house fun; and FREE boat rides too (although you can certainly tip your Captains!).
And of course, you can 'shop local' and support area artisans, craftsmen and tradesmen, as well enjoy delicious food and beverage provisions, and so much more.
Visitors can take a stroll on the promenade along the canal, go for a boat/kayak/bike ride, take part in one of the historical tours and witness the impressive workings of the locks system in operation. You are helping preserve history, support tradition, promote local economic vitality and reinforce the sense of connection that defines Waterford. Together, we continue to celebrate our history while building a vibrant future for our community. Thank you for your support! We'll see you there!
