This Kirkwood Event Features Unique Historical Insights from TIME Magazine's 1963 Man of the Year Coverage and Personal Dealings with Dr. King.
KIRKWOOD, MO (January 12, 2025) - The Kirkwood Human Rights Commission, in partnership with the Kirkwood Public Library, Kirkwood Historical Society, and Kirkwood Social Justice Coalition, announces a special Black History Month presentation exploring The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s role in the civil rights movement through a distinctive journalistic lens.
On Thursday, February 20, 2025, Ben Clark will share insights from his father's experience as TIME magazine's primary correspondent in preparing its 1963 "Man of the Year" article on Dr. King. Drawing from his father's extensive written records and time spent with Dr. King, Clark's presentation offers a unique glimpse into both the broader civil rights movement and the personal dimensions of Dr. King's life and philosophy.
"This presentation explores Dr. King as both a pivotal historical figure and as a person," says David Hartung, Chair of the Kirkwood Human Rights Commission. "Through a journalist's perspective gleaned from personal conversations with Dr. King, we gain valuable insights into Dr. King's philosophical influences, personal traits, and interactions with other key figures of the era."
The presentation examines Dr. King's journey from his religious upbringing through his emergence as a civil rights leader, including his philosophical influences from John Locke to Mahatma Gandhi. It also explores Dr. King's connections to influential figures including President John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, the Reverend Billy Graham, and President Lyndon B. Johnson.
