Residents of Old Wilmington (ROW) proudly presents the Back Door Kitchen Tour on October 12 from 10am-4pm, a tour of 9 historic homes in downtown Wilmington to raise funds for their mission to support historic preservation of the neighborhood and improve the quality of life in the historic district. Founded in 1973, ROW is a volunteer-based non-profit composed of residents who live between Red Cross and Queen Street and bounded by the Cape Fear River and 8th street.
On the tour, homeowners graciously open their homes to showcase the heart of the home, the kitchen, entering the home through the back door and showcasing the 1st floor living spaces to share the history, beauty, architecture and southern charm that Wilmington is known for.
In 2023, we were able to return the monies raised to the community in the form of grants in four categories- historic preservation, social impact, beautification, and community programs.
Recipients included Tileston school to restore structural pillars damaged during Florence, the Wilmington Symphony Orchestra, Kids Making It and Varnum Strings to teach the art of violin making to at risk teenagers learning carpentry skills, the Hannah Block Community Arts Center to purchase new chairs for community events, and the WPD and NHCSD to support the community policing initiative of using e-bikes to improve public safety. Past receipients included Salvation Army, Dreams Academy, The Arts Council of Wilmington and Cape Fear Museum among the many others who benefited over the last 20 years.
