Taiko means “big drum”. Taiko is a tradition of Japanese drumming that was used in villages and temples as a means of communication in festivals, rituals, prayer and war.
Taiko as it is performed today as an ensemble (kumi-daiko) is a phenomenon which was born in 1951 and has spread all over the world. For Asian-Americans and Asian-Canadians, Taiko drumming also symbolizes their reclamation of their heritage and culture.
RAW as a charitable arts organization has always been about more than just drumming. RAW promotes the power of the Taiko drumming as a voice and tool to make positive changes in our world, in our community, and in ourselves.
Toronto Taiko Festival is supported by Toronto Arts Council, Ontario Arts Council, Canada Council for the Arts, and Canadian Heritage.
The concert will have on site ASL interpretation and tickets are available on a sliding scale from $25 - $50 at torontotaikofestival.org
