Bartok and Schostakovich Piano Quintets

The opening night of the festival features quintets by two of the great composers from the 20th century—Béla Bartók and Dmitri Shostakovich. These works, while different in their approach and spirit, share a commitment to exploring and expanding the possibilities of chamber music. We are joined by Huw Watkins who performs with Orlando Jopling and members of the Wild Arts Ensemble in this energetic programme. PROGRAMME Bela Bartók – Quintet in C major Dmitri Shostakovich – Quintet in G minor op. 57 The intricate melodies and rhythmic complexities, in Bartok’s Quintet in C major stress the composer's unique blend of folk and modern harmonic themes whilst Shostakovich's Quintet in G minor op. 57 resonates with haunting melodies and profound emotional depth. Performed by a remarkable group of musicians, The Wild Arts ensemble is joined by the esteemed pianist Huw Watkins, who performs alongside the violinists Jack Greed and Will McGahon, violist Tetsuumi Nagata, and cellist, Orlando Jopling.
