The Korean Cultural Center in Washington, D.C. (KCCDC) is excited to announce "Beyond the Scene," an innovative exhibition that explores the cultural impact of Korean webtoons, particularly focusing on hit titles "The Red Sleeve" and "Jeong-Nyeon." Partnering with the Korea Manhwa Contents Agency (KOMACON), the exhibit is set to run from September 30 through October 25, 2023. This unique event also honors the 70th anniversary of the Korea-US Alliance, underlining the exhibition's thematic emphasis on the power of storytelling as a medium for cross-cultural understanding.
The exhibition's grand opening on September 30 will be a six-hour celebration, from 1:00 to 6:00 PM, featuring an array of activities including live traditional and K-Pop performances, raffles for concert tickets and merchandise, arts and crafts, and experiential cultural zones. Distinguished speakers like KCCDC Director Junghoon Kim and KOMACON President Shin Jong-chul will give opening remarks, followed by an introduction to the thematic organization of the exhibit.
"Beyond the Scene" itself is segmented into three key areas: "From History to Story: The Red Sleeve," which delves into the fictional relationships of King Jeongjo set against the backdrop of the 18th-century Joseon Dynasty; "With Memories and Records: Jeong-Nyeon," which explores women's perspectives in traditional Korean theater during the post-Korean War era; and "Journey to K-Heritage," an expansive look at how webtoons today carry the legacies of traditional Korean literature and history.
In addition to these thematic sections, the exhibition will display English translations of these digital comics, engaging both a local and international audience in the lush visuals, compelling narratives, and nuanced themes these webtoons offer. "The Red Sleeve" and "Jeong-Nyeon" stand as potent illustrations of how webtoons have evolved from their print predecessors, capturing new, tech-savvy audiences while offering fresh lenses through which to explore Korean culture.
The event is open to the public during regular KCCDC walk-in hours (10:00 AM - 5:00 PM, Monday to Friday) and does not require an RSVP for its opening celebration or general admission. "Beyond the Scene" promises to be a dynamic intersection of art, culture, and technology, reflecting both the richness of Korean storytelling and the modern platforms that bring them to life.
