Kevin Barton, a dedicated local volunteer and passionate wildlife advocate, has played a key role in preserving osprey habitats at Jiggs Landing. When the ospreys' traditional nesting site in a dying pine tree became unsafe—causing their eggs to repeatedly fall due to unstable nesting material—Kevin devised an innovative solution. Inspired by an eagle nest restoration in Miami, he creatively adapted the concept, using a papasan chair as a sturdy base for the osprey nest. Kevin’s ingenuity and dedication have provided the ospreys with a secure and stable environment, ensuring their nesting success and contributing to the conservation of these majestic birds. His efforts highlight the profound impact of community-driven action in protecting local wildlife.
To support this cause, we are now accepting donations for our silent auction, which will benefit Kevin’s initiatives and help enhance osprey habitats. The auction will feature bird-related items such as art, birdhouses, books, and more, generously contributed by community members. This special event will be held in April, with the exact date to be announced soon. Additionally, papasan chairs are needed for other nesting sites. Together, we can make a lasting difference for these incredible birds and their habitats.
