Cyrano's Art Gallery, 3800 Debarr, is open Thursdays and Fridays from noon-4pm and during all CTC performances.
Nancy Burnham lives and works in Ester, Alaska. She has been creating encaustic paintings, mixed media and sculpture more than two decades.
She became interested in encaustics after seeing works by Jasper Johns, the Fayum paintings of ancient Egypt and other more recent contemporaries. Johns was able to create meatiness and texture in his encaustic paintings. This appealed to Burnham and has influenced much of her work.
She experimented successfully, and not so, to develop a 'language' and relationship with the medium. She enjoys the immediacy of some of the techniques. The hot wax can be painted and yield results in a matter of minutes. Layers can be added or scraped or poured creating a history within each piece.
Many of the paintings exhibited here include the use of encaustic and oil paint, paper, ink, shellac and a variety of drawing materials.
