FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE | Gil Taiber Scholarship Fundraiser to be Held at Octopus on May 29, 2022 at 3:30 pm
Octopus College Hill in Cedar Falls, Iowa is hosting the 2nd annual Gil Taiber Scholarship Fundraiser on Sunday, May 29, 2022 starting at 3:30 pm. The opener for this year’s festival is Jordan Sellergren - https://www.jordansellergren.com/, followed by Tommy Kelly - https://www.tommykellymusic.com/. Redgie Blanco will have the La Calle food truck available for delicious Latin fare to fill our bellies. There will be a $10 suggested donation at the door, as well as ‘Think Twice’ stickers and a limited number of commemorative t-shirts available for purchase. All proceeds from the door and merchandise will go to the Gil Taiber Scholarship Fund. All ages welcome, doors open at 3:00 pm.
Gil Taiber died in a tragic, single-car accident on May 30, 2019 from not wearing his seatbelt. He was only 17 years old. Through the Community Foundation of Northeast Iowa, and all the generous gifts from Gil’s friends and family, Gil’s family established the Gil Taiber Scholarship Fund to raise money to support other high school graduates pursuing a college education. Since grade school, Gil loved basketball. Whether it was through school, AAU, or endlessly practicing at open gyms and the local rec center. For the 2 years before he died, Gil worked at Maid Rite in Waterloo and Urban Pie in Cedar Falls; all while maintaining a 3.85 or above GPA. He was planning to study finance or accounting and play basketball in college. The Gil Taiber Scholarship Fund emulates the hard work, dedication, and passion Gil had at the time of his death. The scholarship will be awarded annually to a graduating senior from an area high school who shares these qualities.
‘Think Twice’ is a phrase Gil and his mom came up with when he started making typical, impulsive choices as a young boy. They even continued to use this phrase as Gil got older. Gil’s family has embraced this phrase to help raise awareness of wearing seatbelts while driving or riding as a passenger. Stickers and t-shirts with the ‘Think Twice’ message will be sold at the event. All proceeds going to the Gil Taiber Scholarship Fund.
Please join us in raising money for the Gil Taiber Scholarship Fund through this Fundraiser Festival, Sunday May 29, 2022 at 3:30 pm.
