Festival Details - "Guitar League Monthly Meeting"...

Start: Monday, June 10, 2024 8:00PM
End: Monday, June 10, 2024 10:00PM

Folk music which wouldn't be Folk music if it weren't for Woody Guthrie. A true legend, folk hero, man of the people and one of the most significant figures in Folk music history. His life wasn't without controversy because he focused many songs on Socialism and Anti-Fascism which led to his being black listed by the House Committee on Un-American Activities a communist witch hunt group of hearings held in the 1950's. His legendary status was cemented with the publication of his autobiography "Bound For Glory" and the tens of thousands of songs he wrote in his lifetime. Woody's son Arlo followed in his father's footsteps as a musician however he was not as prolific a songwriter. Arlo mined a similar vein as Woody with songs of protest and social injustice but his claim to fame is the lengthy, humorous "Alice's Restaurant" and a chart topping cover of Steve Goodman's "City of New Orleans". Both put an indelible stamp on music, culture and entertainment and at our next meeting we will honor them both with these songs: Woody Vigilante Man Grand Coulee Dam This Land Is Your Land Arlo Coming into Los Angeles Last Train City of New Orleans We will "extend" some of these selections for our beginning guitarist providing an in depth look. Come to our next meeting and explore the roots of Folk and it's offspring. Remember to bring you guitar, capo, pick(s) and a music stand is helpful. As always your first meeting is FREE!
