Jazz Romp with Hillary Smith & Glenn Kostur

The 19th Annual New Mexico Jazz Festival kicks off with two of New Mexico's favorites - vocalist Hillary Smith and saxophonist Glenn Kostur, who have been making music together for nearly 30 years and sharing the stage in groups like Hip Pocket, Soul Kitchen, Chill House, and the Albuquerque Jazz Orchestra. Shaped by shared roots in jazz, soul, blues, and R&B, their musical connection runs deep, and, tonight, they showcase the long tradition in jazz of vocalists and saxophonists forming creative partnerships, ie: Billie Holiday and Lester Young. Focusing on the jazz side of their musical partnership, Kostur and Smith build on their tribute to Nancy Wilson and Cannonball Adderley, which they performed at the Outpost a couple of years ago. They are joined by John Funkhouser, pianos; Gordy Johnson, bass; and Rich Malloy, drums.
