One of the foremost exponents of Afro-Latin music in the world today, Santos has received numerous awards and honors for artistic excellence and social dedication. His Sextet, formed in 2003, performs Classic Latin Jazz from Cuba, Puerto Rico, the US, and other Latin American sources as well as original compositions and highlights the historical and cultural significance of Latin Jazz as well as its aesthetic - instrumentation, rhythm, interpretation and improvisation. The Sextet's newest recording project, The Art of Descarga, on the legendary Smithsonian Folkways label, highlights the spontaneous, improvisatory interplay that is the beating heart of Latin jam sessions. It’s John Santos, congas, percussion; John Calloway, flute, percussion; Charlie Gurke, saxophones; Marco Diaz, piano; Saul Sierra, bass; and David Flores, drums.
