Lansing-area families are invited to Lids for Kids-Lansing, on Saturday, May 17, for a fun and educational event focused on bike safety. Children will receive a free, custom-fitted bike helmet, learn important bicycle safety tips, and enjoy family-friendly activities – all made possible by local businesses and organizations dedicated to preventing head injuries in children.
Now in its 23rd year, Lids for Kids promotes bike safety and provides children with the most important tool for preventing bike-related head injuries: a properly fitted helmet. Research shows wearing a bike helmet can reduce the risk of head injuries by 85%, brain injuries by 88%, and severe brain injuries by at least 75%. Yet, only about 15% of kids 14 and under wear helmets while biking. Lids for Kids is working to change that.
Since its inception, more than 14,000 bike helmets have been distributed to Michigan children through Lids for Kids events.
The Lansing event will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Marshall Street Fire Station, located on the corner of Grand River and Marshall Street. Trained volunteers will custom-fit every bike helmet. Children must be present to receive a helmet.
Children can also:
- Enter to win a brand-new bicycle
- Meet local firefighters and explore a real fire engine
- Enjoy fun activities for all ages
The Lansing event is proudly sponsored by: Sinas Dramis Law Firm, Brain Injury Association of Michigan, Origami Brain Injury Rehabilitation Center, and Michigan Association for Justice.
Local event partners include: WLAJ-TV / WLNS-TV, Applied Innovation and Lansing Fire Department.
