Unplug and enjoy a peaceful, leisurely stroll perusing arts and crafts against the majestic background of the Sierra Nevada Mountains at this free, open-air festival. The free event, which runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, takes place on the grounds of Kittredge Sports, at the corner of Highway 203 (Main Street) and Forest Trail in Mammoth Lakes. Visit Mammoth Lakes Open Air Arts and Crafts Fair, shop for handcrafted treasures, get to know the artists and learn the stories behind each piece they make. Musical entertainment provided each day from 11am to 3pm, by Sandy Anderson and Mark Flippin from Sandy and the High Country. Among this year’s artists:
Jewelry
Cathy Enright’s, Stone Blossoms Jewelry, passion for creating jewelry started with a love of semi-precious gemstones, and evolved into a passion for creating contemporary style jewelry using sterling silver, copper, gold and semi precious gemstones. The abundant natural beauty of her surroundings in California’s Eastern Sierra inspires Cathy’s work. Short walks near her Mammoth Lakes’ home studio and long hikes in the mountains supply her with plentiful ideas for pieces that strive to reflect nature’s beauty and forms.
Three Dimensional Artwork
Lindsey Preciado-Weaver, Where the Sidewalk Ends Boutique, creates three-dimensional paintings of Yosemite and other nature scenes. Her work is built into frames in layers (e?ectively shadowboxes) using watercolor paper, gouache, and micron pen. There are typically 3-4 layers of imagery incorporated to create the overall painting or shadowbox. Lindsey’s artwork is inspired by her natural surroundings and her love for travel. She’s an avid solo camper and world traveler, and you’ll always find her with a portable paint set and
sketchbook.
Photography
Mark B. Levin, Mark Levin Photography, is a photographer who captures both the quiet beauty and the formidable struggle to survive in the harsh and unforgiving conditions of the American landscape. Thanks to the unique topography of California, Levin taught himself to shoot shadow and light among the waves of Malibu, the mountains of the Eastern Sierras, and the dunes of the Mojave Desert. An avid outdoorsman, skier, and surfer, Levin is at his best when the elements are at their worst – a thunderstorm, a whiteout, a freezing winter night. It is in those moments that Levin’s photos reflect the vastness of the landscape before him, yet reveal the very texture, detail, and silence that comprises a truly American image.
Sculpture
Since 1972, Tucson-based artist Lui Escoto, Original Creations in Wire, has been creating expressive wire sculptures without any formal training. Galvanized steel wire and aluminum mesh are primarily the media he uses to construct highly detailed 3-D representations of Native American figures in various scenes.
Escoto approaches his work in a unique way. “Traditional sculptors carve away from a block—I do the opposite,” he explains. “I build from nothing.” Each sculpture demands patience and precision and can take between 30 to 200 hours to complete depending on the size and intricacy.
Mono Arts Council will have a booth onsite providing information about their vital service. We support Eastern Sierra Artists through Professional Development Training, space in our Gallery & Community Arts Center, opportunities to sell and showcase art at businesses and companies throughout Mono County, and for those who have a knack, Teaching Opportunities for both Youth and Adults. Our goal is for every resident, young and old, to have access to arts opportunities through Mono Arts Council.
