Join us for a spectacular evening of sacred choral music as Wooburn Singers and English Sinfonia come together to perform two towering masterpieces of the Baroque and Classical eras: CPE Bach’s Magnificat and Mozart’s Mass in C Minor plus a performance of JS Bach’s Violin Concerto in E major ??C.P.E. Bach – Magnificat in D Major Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was the second surviving son of the great Johann Sebastian Bach, and his first wife, Maria Barbara. It was during his Berlin years that, in 1749, he composed his only important church work, the Magnificat. It takes its text from Mary’s canticle from St. Luke’s Gospel (Chapter 1, v. 46–55) The work contains a number of unmistakable borrowings from his father’s Magnificat. ?? J.S. Bach Violin Concerto in E major Having already led the English Sinfonia in one of the evening’s choral works, Janice Graham steps into the spotlight as soloist for Bach’s Violin Concerto in E major. Renowned for her expressive musicianship and refined artistry, she brings clarity, warmth and sparkle to this joyous concerto. Her intimate connection with the orchestra promises a performance of elegance, energy and deep musical understanding. ?? W.A. Mozart – Mass in C Minor (“Great”) Mozart’s Mass in C Minor is an extraordinary, deeply personal work, combining operatic drama, lyrical beauty, and monumental choral writing. Though unfinished, it stands as one of Mozart’s greatest sacred compositions — both intimate and majestic. Written in thanks for his fiancée’s recovery from illness, it features some of Mozart’s most expressive writing for voice. With soloists: Soprano - Jessica Cale, Mezzo - Samantha Price, Tenor – Gwilym Bowen, Baritone - Michael Ronan This concert is the final concert in this year’s Wooburn Festival – www.wooburn.com
