The purpose of these workshops is to provide our participants with an opportunity to learn a new skill, or hobby that they could use once the workshop has been completed. With the help of our talented film instructors, we teach an introduction into filmmaking and storytelling through a three day film workshop. On Day 1 we do instructor and participant introductions followed by a basic intro into film making. To end Day 1, we do an ice breaker session where we break the participants up into groups of three and create a silent film on a particular word. This allows the participants to get to know each other and collaborate on a film where there is no audio to dictate what the film is about. The goal is to come in on Day 2 and be able to guess the word that is being portrayed in the silent film. During day 2, after some more instruction on film making and story telling, the participants get an opportunity to come together and do a brainstorming session where we come up with different film ideas that the veterans might want to pursue. These ideas, more often than not, come from military experience or stories that they want to put on the film. After lunch they will form multiple groups and collaborate to come up with film ideas, the possible script of the film, props for the film, and positions that they will perform for the film. This could be acting, directing or background film work. On Day 3, the participants will film their movies in the morning usually wrapping by 2pm and then get to learn how to edit the films in the afternoon. By the end of day 3, they will see a mostly finished film as we screen them to finish the workshop. The films are usually between 4 and 6 minutes long, with most of them having a very powerful message. Food will be provided during the time the participants are in the workshop. This workshop is Free for the participants.
