Science Center Up Late: Experience Sound

These events will invite guests ages 21 and older (presentation of valid ID is required for entry) to engage their curiosity in science through play, discovery and collaboration with professionals in various fields. The first event in the Science Center Up Late series will be Experience Sound on July 19 — highlighting the science and technology behind the harmonic notes heard and felt through music, movies, nature and more. Featured activities will include: • The transformation of the McDonnell Planetarium into an audio lounge inspired by the Japanese Jazz Kissa. • Atmospheric music inspired by nature, featuring artist Alyssa Miserendino in the OMNIMAX® Theater. • A twist on the silent disco, “Quantum Disco” – highlighted by different genres of music playing simultaneously under the watchful eye of the Science Center’s iconic Tyrannosaurus rex. • “Two Scientists Walk into a Bar” – meet with local STEM experts over casual drinks and ask them anything. • “The Sounds of Sci-Fi” – demonstrations on how foley artists create iconic movie magic. • A live creation of art and music – featuring a combined contribution from local artists and banks. • Hands-on and visual demonstrations to explore sound in music and everyday activities. • A display of “Auto Audio” – unveiling the art of designing top-of-the-line car audio systems. • An exhibition of “Sound in Pictures” – featuring the Missouri History Museum’s collection of St. Louis music photos. • Play a game of “Beep Ball” to “see” with your ears (in partnership with Mindseye Radio) • Test the limits of human hearing by putting your skills to the test in recognizing various pitches and sounds (in partnership with Washington University Neuroscience Outreach). • A specialty crafted “Stempunk Lager” by Steampunk Brew Works, themed liquor from local distiller STilL 630 and original snacks celebrating the evening’s theme.
