LAKEWOOD RANCH, FLORIDA (November 17, 2024) – On November 17th, during epilepsy awareness month, Lakewood Ranch resident and CURE Epilepsy Champion Sean Rabus and his family will be holding a 2.6-mile fun run and 1-mile walk raising awareness for the 1 in 26 people living with the challenges of epilepsy. All proceeds will benefit CURE Epilepsy.
“Sean is our superhero—strong, resilient, and always lighting up the room with his bright smile. Epilepsy and Menkes have taken many things from him, including his smile when he was first diagnosed. However, with grace, patience, and the support of incredible doctors, medications, and therapies, we’ve been able to manage his seizures, allowing his amazing smile to return. For kids like Sean, controlling seizures means a chance to thrive, grow, and spread joy and laughter. This is why our family is committed to CURE Epilepsy and finding a cure for this devastating disease that affects so many. We envision a world filled with smiles, free from seizures. Sean deserves this, as does everyone impacted by epilepsy.,” said Maureen Flood Rabus.
Sean, five, was diagnosed with epilepsy secondary to Menkes disease at just seven months old. Sean and his family are all too aware that controlling Sean’s seizures through medication and other therapies is how he is still able to grow and thrive.
Unfortunately, epilepsy’s reach extends far beyond just Sean, affecting over 3.4 million Americans, with 200,000 cases being diagnosed each year. Approximately 50,000 deaths occur from seizures and seizure-related causes in the U.S. each year. CURE Epilepsy is the leading nongovernmental funder of epilepsy research. CURE Epilepsy funds research grants for early career and established investigators around the globe. Research is our greatest hope of finding a cure, and each discovery brings us closer to achieving freedom from seizures and medication side effects for people living with epilepsy.
The CURE Epilepsy Champions program, a grassroots fundraising and awareness effort that includes nearly 50 events hosted by supporters across the US and that raised nearly $450,000 in 2023, is instrumental in helping fund transformational research that may one day provide relief from the devastating seizures and side effects that impact Sean and his family.
The November 17th fun run and walk will begin at 10am at the Sapphire Point Amenities Center located at 5970 Bluestar Court, Lakewood Ranch, FL 34211 where food, drink, and facilities will be provided. For more information, please visit: https://give.cureepilepsy.org/Shuffle24

About CURE Epilepsy

CURE Epilepsy is a parent-founded, research-focused nonprofit committed to finding a cure for epilepsy. Epilepsy is a complex, often debilitating neurological disorder that will affect 1 in 26 Americans in their lifetime. Since 1998, we have invested in cutting-edge research and filled critical funding gaps in foundational science to expand our understanding of the underlying mechanisms of epilepsy and help us discover a cure. We have raised more than $100 million and funded over 300 epilepsy research projects — more than any other non-governmental organization in the United States. Working alongside our community of researchers and clinicians, we’ve invested in initiatives which have led to breakthroughs in the genetic diagnosis of epilepsy, potential treatments for infantile spasms, and a greater understanding of how we can prevent sudden death in epilepsy, among other advances. Research is our greatest hope of finding a cure, and each discovery brings us closer to achieving freedom from seizures and medication side effects for people living with epilepsy. Join us as we lead the search for a cure. Learn more at CUREepilepsy.org.
