Two concertos and a stage work open our 22nd season, with music from three different stylistic periods. Haydn’s Sinfonia concertante, featuring a quartet accompanied by the orchestra (not unlike a Baroque concerto grosso), exhibits Haydn’s mastery of harmony and melody within the formal confines of the Classical era. Poulenc’s organ concerto, while not as well known, is an electrifying example of music of the early Modern period. Rounding out our opening concert is Mendelssohn’s famous incidental music for Shakespeare’s play A Midsummer Night’s Dream, a great example of the early Romantic period, with a final march that virtually everyone will know.
