Some musicians win awards. Then there are the very few who have awards named after them. Terry Robb – hailed as a blues guitar virtuoso and one of the finest acoustic guitarists on the international scene – is one of those guys. The Vancouver-born, Portland-based bluesman took home the Muddy Award for Best Acoustic Guitar so many times that the Cascade Blues Association finally broke down and attached his name to the trophy permanently.
Recognition for his artistry doesn't stop there. The Oregon Music Hall of Famer has been praised by Rolling Stone, Acoustic Guitar, Down Beat, Guitar Player, Vintage Guitar, Living Blues and Oprah’s O Magazine, extolling his talents as a finger-picker, singer, songwriter, arranger and producer. He's toured the country with Buddy Guy, Steve Miller, Robin Trowrer, and John Fahey, appeared on Late Night With Conan O'Brien, dazzled the crowd at the Rose Garden during Portland Trail Blazers games, and collaborated with the Oregon Symphony. During his multi-decade run in the spotlight – one in which he's released fifteen acclaimed albums – he's shown himself to be a master of nearly every blues style and technique imaginable.
From the notes for his new album ‘Howlin’ Waters', released on New Folk Records and distributed by MVD Entertainment Group:
'Howlin' Waters,' the new album from Terry Robb, reinforces why he's regarded as one of the foremost acoustic blues guitarists of our time (or any time!). Across thirteen glistening tracks, his acclaimed fingerpicking mastery brings a new level of flair and depth to a range of moods and styles that not only feel as current as any new blues today, but also offer direct touchstones to ragtime, jazz, folk/americana and even rock and roll. The way his songs all tie back to blues are a direct reflection of his roots. "The people I heard were delta blues guys who were fingerpickers. In the '60s there was a big guitar thing coming around and there was also a big blues revival. A lot of the old recordings were reissued and rediscovered by a new generation. Even the electric guys like Hubert Sumlin and John Lee Hooker were fingerpickers. I was never really comfortable with a flat pick. I play lots of different kinds of songs but my techniques come from leaning on blues guitar. A lot of my solo playing is influenced by people like Blind Blake and Reverend Gary Davis and from what I learned working with and producing John Fahey. Whether I'm playing bossa or ragtime it still comes out as blues.”
Adam Scramstad is an award winning Acoustic/Electric Finger-style & Blues Musician, born and raised in Oregon. Performing regularly throughout the Pacific Northwest, Scramstad’s reputation as a professional Blues Guitarist & Vocalist is rapidly becoming widespread.
A strong and creative Songwriter in his own-right, Scramstad’s repertoire also covers a broad range of early American Folk/Blues artists’ works – such as: Son House, Bukka White, Mississippi John Hurt, Rev. Gary Davis, Robert Johnson, Big Bill Broonzy, Lightning Hopkins, Blind Blake, John Fahey, Elizabeth Cotton.
Adam’s 2006 debut Solo album "No Sun Around Blues" climbed to #33 on the Roots Music Radio Blues Chart - June 2006. The CD is a mix of acoustic blues (w/vocal) & finger-style guitar songs, and quickly became a favorite of local NW Radio Stations. His music has been featured on the nationally syndicated “Blues Deluxe Show” as well as receiving regular airplay on many regional, national and international stations/shows.
