The Bach Choir’s annual performance of Bach’s St Matthew Passion is sung in English in this much-anticipated fixture in London’s musical calendar.
In a Palm Sunday performance, the oratorio tells the story of the events leading up to the crucifixion of Jesus.
The first part includes the last supper and the betrayal and arrest of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane.
The second part depicts the trial, crucifixion and burial of Jesus, ending with the chorus ‘in tears of grief’. Bach knew that in a few days his parishioners would be celebrating Jesus’ resurrection at Easter.
The story is told by the Evangelist, a role for tenor voice.
In this performance he is played by Nick Pritchard, called 'a supple, lucid Evangelist' by The Guardian.
Soprano Sophie Bevan won an MBE in 2019 for her services to music.
Ensemble Florilegium specialises in Baroque music.
