Festival Details - "The Johnson City Symphony Orchestra Presents Home for the Holidays"...

Start: Saturday, December 14, 2024 7:30PM
End: Saturday, December 14, 2024 9:30PM

On December 14 at 7:30 PM, the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra invites you “Home for the Holidays” as they return once again to Seeger Chapel at Milligan University. “Before the equally beautiful Mary Martin Center for the Arts was built on the ETSU campus, Milligan University graciously hosted each concert in our season,” said Board President Theresa Garbe. “While we love playing at both venues, Seeger Chapel will always feel like home to us. We invite you to join us in this festively decorated hall for an evening of nostalgic and inspirational performances.”

Christopher Plaas will join the orchestra in several Christmas, Hanukkah, and seasonal favorites. His vibrant tenor voice has been enjoyed in operatic performances around the world, and now it will soar in Seeger Chapel. Plaas will sing two movements from “Dies Natalis” (Latin for birthday, anniversary) from a cantata by Gerald Finzi, and will also present the beloved holiday classics, “Ave Maria,” “Silver Bells,” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”

The concert will also feel like “coming home” because of the return of Josh Smith to the stage. Best known from his work on WJHL TV, Smith has shared his warm personality for several Johnson City Symphony Orchestra performances. On December 14, he will introduce pieces throughout the program, no doubt giving the audience helpful background on selections such as Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Dance of the Tumblers,” “Festival of Sounds of Hanukkah,” arranged by Holcombe, two selections from The Nutcracker by Tchaikovsky, and Bach’s beautiful, restful piece, “Sheep May Safely Graze.”

“We in this area have experienced serious trauma from the visit of Hurricane Helene,” said Garbe. “These performances of beloved pieces beautifully performed by Christopher Plaas and the JCSO will offer an evening of respite, an opportunity to set our minds on things above our problems. We cordially invite you to join us as we prepare for the coming holidays.”
