The Cotton Club Museum & Cultural Center is at it again! We’re presenting our “Third Annual Black Cowboys & Cowgirls in Florida: Then & Now,” a two-day extravaganza on Friday, April 17, and Saturday, April `18, 2026. This free celebration is fun for all ages.
On Friday, April 17, at 6:00 PM, John “Ronnie” Nix, President of the North Central Florida Black Farmers Association, will present a panoramic history of Black Cowboys in Florida, from their origins in Africa to the present. Judge Mikaela Nix-Walker, rancher and former rodeo contestant, will share her experiences. Also, Rick Wallace, owner of a rodeo school in Williston, Florida. An original documentary produced by UF Journalism Professor Antoine Haywood will be screened. The documentary features two young local cowboys: Keilyn Fuller, UF student and beef rancher; and Tayelen Seabrook, award-winning professional rodeo star. View an exciting movie (popcorn included!) on African American cowboys throughout the U.S.
Saturday, April 18, 11:00 AM to 4:00 PM, features both indoor and outdoor activities. Learn care and handling of horses, and take a horse ride on the CCMCC grounds. Roping and lassoing demonstrations. Kids’ outdoor games. “Smooth Flava Dancers” will lead square and line dances, and all may join in. Scott “Free” Smith will be rocking live on guitar. Food such as BBQ, fried fish, grilled hot dogs, and sweet treats. Items such as jewelry, clothing, crafts, fresh produce, healthcare products. Displays by community organizations.
