Tohono O'odham and Akimel O'odham Online Basketry Show

The vintage collection includes rare, museum quality vintage baskets woven by exceptional Tohono O'odham and Akimel O'odham (Pima) artisans.

The contemporary collection has a wide assortment of new Tohono O'odham baskets. All vintage and contemporary baskets are handwoven from Sonoran Desert plant materials.

Here in Southern Arizona, Tohono O'odham (People of the Desert) and Akimel O'odham (River People) gather Sonoran Desert plant materials by hand to weave baskets in the traditional way.

The inner coil, the warp, is made from Beargrass and the outer design, the weft, is made from Soaptree Yucca (natural green or sun-bleached white). Other materials are also woven into the basket's design using Devil's Claw pod (black), or in more rare instances, the root from the Banana Yucca (red).
