Isabelle "Izzy" Grossman is a modern young woman who lives alone in uptown Manhattan, works in a bookstore, and dreams about romance with a "name" author who frequents the bookstore. She is also very devoted to her grandmother "Bubbie" who still lives in a predominately Jewish section of the Lower East Side. Bubbie enlists Hannah Mendelbaum, a matchmaker, to bring a young pickle merchant, Sam, over to the house to meet her granddaughter. As an emancipated modern woman, Izzy recoils from such outdated dating. Over time, Izzy learns that appearances can be deceiving and preconceived notions about people can be very wrong.
"Crossing Delancey" premiered off-Broadway at the Jewish Repertory Theatre on April 25, 1985. Susan Sandler wrote the play and adapted her own play into a major motion picture in 1988, starring Amy Irving, Peter Riegert, Jeroen Krabbé and Sylvia Miles.
