Weller Martin and Fonsia Dorsey meet on the porch of their nursing home and strike up a friendship, and begin to play gin rummy. As they play, they share stories about the lives they led in the outside world. but soon their gin games and conversations become a battleground, with each player exposing the other's failures, disappointments and insecurities.
This two-person, two-act play by Donald L. Coburn opened on Broadway in 1977 and starred the married couple Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for 1978. It was also nominated for numerous other awards, with Jessica Tandy winning the Tony for Best Actress. There have been numerous revivals of the play, and even a television adaptation with Dick Van Dyke and Mary Tyler Moore.
