After being convicted of a petty crime, a charming con artist named Randle McMurphy contrives to serve his short sentence in an airy mental institution rather than in a prison. He soon learns this was a mistake, as he immediately clashes with the authoritarian head nurse, Nurse Ratched. Despite Ratched's strict reign, McMurphy quickly takes over the yard, leading others out of introversion, staging a revolt so that they can see the World Series on television, and arranging a rollicking midnight party with liquor and women. But McMurphy's brash insubordination has its consequences.
Adapted by Ken Wasserman from the best-selling novel by Ken Kesey, the play made its Broadway preview in 1963. Since then, it has had two revivals: first off-Broadway in 1971; then as a Broadway production in 2001. It was the 2001 production that won several awards, including a Tony for Best Revival of a play. A film version of the play was released in 1975 and was nominated for nine Academy Awards, winning five, including one for Best Picture.
