End: Thursday, March 13, 2025 11:00AM
Please join the League of Women Voters of Oak Park/River Forest to hear an update on the SAFE-T Act (Safety, Fairness and Equity Today Act). As a result of the Act, after litigation culminating at the Illinois Supreme Court, today there is NO cash bail in the State of Illinois. Now, First Appearance Court hearings have replaced Bond Hearings, and Detention Hearings must be held separately for an arrestee to be held in jail before trial. In addition, the Act requires pretrial services in all 102 Illinois counties.
Janice Goldberg, Chair of the League of Women Voters Cook County Criminal Justice Interest Group, will explain the law, impressions on its implementation since it went into effect in 2023, and the League's role in its enactment. Janice has been an active member and leader in various chapters of the League, including the Cook County and LaGrange Area Leagues, and she brings speaking expertise gained in 38 years as a social studies teacher and a volunteer in League and political organization campaigns and activities.
Free and open to the public. Bring friends, join us for a coffee and snack, and enrich your knowledge!
