Vashon Japan Festival @ Mukai Farm & Garden
Festival Details - "Vashon Japan Festival @ Mukai Farm & Garden"...
Start: Saturday, September 10, 2022 11:00AM
End: Saturday, September 10, 2022 8:00PM
Plan on spending part or most of the day playing, picnicking, dancing or just taking in a community cultural event on the grounds of Mukai Farm & Garden. This free community event will include learning, or just watching, Bon Odori – a summer dance for everyone. Kids can explore and run though the Children’s Village. There will be food, the nominoichi collectibles market of Asian objects, vendors and nonprofit organizations, Taiko drumming and entertainment.
Featured will be a world premiere of the play, Kichi in the Woods of Present Memory, written by Bryan Willis and performed by the Vashon Repertory Theater under the direction of Charlotte Tiencken. The play is based on the unusual and true story of shipwrecked Japanese in North America.
The day’s highlight will be a rare performance by legendary keyboardist Philip Woo, a Garfield/Franklin High School graduate. Woo has played with a who’s who lineup of musicians and singers and is in demand internationally. Woo will be making a stop at Japan Fest from his home in Tokyo.
The Vashon Bookmobile will host a free book giveaway, in partnership with Mukai Farm & Garden, for young and young adult readers with stories from local and well known Japanese American and Asian authors. Students can explore Asian culture and experience and select a free book as long as they last.
Japan Fest will close out the day with a reflective walk through the Lantern Labyrinth and a free 8 p.m. showing of Kiki’s Delivery Service at the Vashon Theater.
Families and young visitors are invited to the Vashon Theater for a free showing of Kiki’s Delivery Service at 8 p.m. The animated fantasy tells the story of a young girl and her friendships as she strikes out on her own as a witch in a new town.
Outdoor activities pose a lower risk of spreading COVID-19, but you may want to consider wearing a mask.
Japan Fest is sponsored by Mukai to share the enjoyment and exploration of Vashon’s Japanese American history and Asian culture, and how cultures can connect us to our community. Welcome are new members, volunteers and donations that support the discovery of island history and cultures and the mission of Mukai Farm & Garden.
