For some individuals, their adult lives are filled with a pool of unmet needs, a legacy of interpersonal turmoil, a range of disruptive trauma reactions and a deficit of skill, motivation and support to move beyond their past. These individuals may become chronically depressed, have addictions and are vulnerable to ongoing victimization. They may also be more likely to become “stuck” in counselling and to be prone to therapeutic impasses. In this workshop, a conceptual framework for understanding and guiding your work with these complex individuals will be discussed. You will learn how to assess and respond ethically and appropriately to clients with complex trauma, given the parameters of your workplace, including practical strategies to assist clients to develop adaptive coping and overcome the debilitating effects of trauma symptoms, rigid maladaptive patterns and the core beliefs that drive these patterns. This workshop is designed for experienced front-line workers (social workers, nurses, clergy, addiction counselors, residential workers etc) who are not trauma counsellors but who provide support and/or counselling contact with vulnerable populations in community-based settings.   Presenter Natalie Zlodre, MSW, RSW, is the Director of Community Resources and Initiatives, a trauma-informed consulting firm that provides clinical consultation and supervision to mental health professionals and organizations. Previously, she was Head of the Trauma and Resiliency Centre and Associate Director of Training at the Gail Appel Institute, Hincks-Dellcrest Centre. She is known for her direct and lively style and her ability to translate complex theories about traumatic responses into relevant practices for post-traumatic growth in vulnerable populations.   Cancellation Policy An administrative fee of $50 will be charged for all cancellations. Cancellation 14 or more days prior to the workshop date – receive a refund, less $50 administration fee. Cancellation less than 14 days prior to the workshop date – receive a credit, less $50 administration fee, to be applied to a future workshop. No credit or refund will be issued if you do not notify us in advance of the workshop date. You may transfer your registration to another person without prior notice. The organizers reserve the right to cancel the event due to under-enrollment, instructor illness or inclement weather. If a workshop is cancelled, any payment will be returned in full.   Accommodations The Festival Inn is pleased to offered preferred rates for Mission: Empowerment guests.
