Sounds From the Black Hole is a monthly concert series in Bloomington, IN focused on experimental music and the exploration of sound. This month features the shifting, neophonic drones of cellist Lia Kohl with violist Whitney Johnson, the cassette & synthesizer duo Local Hypertext, and looped lap steel guitar from Brandon Spaulding. 7PM DOORS /// 8PM SHOW /// ALL-AGES $12 IN ADVANCE // $15 AT DOOR + FOOD OR DRINK PURCHASE REQUIRED ________________________ I was first introduced to Whitney Johnson's music through her project Matchess, where songs often hide behind more prominent loops and textures. Lia Kohl's solo work is similarly transportive, taking the listener to external times and spaces. In their collaboration, the trajectory of song is gone and stasis comes to the forefront. Rather than transport, the sounds fold inward, enveloping and meditating upon a specific locus. "At once stimulating and soothing, For Translucence is a living, breathing meditation in which layers of acoustic strings, synthesizers, field recordings, radio and sine waves illuminate each other as they twine and grow." https://liakohl.bandcamp.com/album/for-translucence https://matchess.bandcamp.com/ https://whitneyjohnson.bandcamp.com/album/hav https://liairenekohl.com/ ________________________ Xylocept+Lather=Local Hypertext Two sonic explorers mine liminal places and fleeting moments which were lucky enough to be captured. Live sound collage and data warp. https://lather.bandcamp.com/track/october-16-2024-at-walkover-sounds https://xylocept.bandcamp.com/ ________________________ Brandon Spaulding loops snippets of melody into a gorgeous, shimmering stream of sound. He played the series in the winter of 2024, captivating the room with simply a lap steel guitar and sparse pedal chain. The perfect music for cloudgazing. https://brandonspaulding.bandcamp.com/
