A day of musical joy in the centre of Taunton with London’s amazing Kinetika Bloco and all for free. This a chance to explore the vibrant musical world of street bands and carnival music with everything from ancient horns to drum groups, street bands, youth groups, folk fiddle and solo singers. A day when you can go ‘Dancing in the Streets’, where everyone can join in, with the chance to create live art, sing, play and dance. There will be a big stage in the centre of town and music and workshops in the Museum of Somerset and Castle Green. And there will be plenty to eat and drink at the museum café and especially at the wonderful Taunton Independent market on Castle Green, where there will be more music.
Festival organiser Tim Hill says.
‘This will be a rich and wonderful day in Taunton, a day that highlights the towns rich culture with something for everyone and the chance to hear great music and young performers, to play, dance, sing, and enjoy some excellent food and drink’.
There will be performances by the Keralan drum group Taunton Beats, The Exeter Street Band, wonderful local singer De Ja, The Sound of the Streets own big band and The MAD dance Academy. Featured will be young musicians in The Sound of the Streets youth bands, The Sound Invaders, Silver Sounds and The Big Friendly Street Band from Devon. The Mad Dance Academy will be performing with The Kinetika Bloco and The Sound of the Streets.
There will be the chance to create live art in a collaboration with Go Create Taunton, in a special space where you create ‘action art’ along with the music. In the Museum courtyard people can hear traditional music and ancient horns with Phil Humphries on the old instruments, the Serpent and carnyx and folk fiddler Colin Thompson.
This is the fourth annual street band festival by The Sound of the Streets. The Sound of the Streets brings towns, parks and public spaces alive with the vibrant sounds of street music and inspires and support children and young people to make music. Musicians of all abilities will have the chance to join a big street band with a workshop with the Kinetika Bloco in the morning at the Museum.
The Bloco are a London based youth project is an exuberant mix of young brass and woodwind players, drummers, steel pan and dancers, creating a “unique new British Carnival sound with a decidedly London edge” (BBC Radio 2).
