Festival Details - "Wings Above: A Bird Nest Awareness Event"...

Start: Saturday, April 12, 2025 2:00PM
End: Saturday, April 12, 2025 10:00PM

Kevin Barton is the kind of dedicated local volunteer and passionate wildlife advocate who transforms challenges into conservation triumphs. When an aging pine tree-a once-safe nesting site for ospreys at Jiggs Landing-became hazardous, causing eggs to fall, Kevin took action. Inspired by an eagle nest restoration in Miami, he ingeniously repurposed a papasan chair to create a stable, secure base for the ospreys. His creativity not only ensured their safety through three hurricanes but also led to successful offspring, a clear testament to the power of community-driven conservation.

In support of these efforts, we're now accepting donations for a silent auction scheduled on April 12, 2025. Proceeds will benefit Kevin's initiatives and help further enhance osprey habitats through additional projects, such as acquiring more papasan chairs for nesting sites. The auction will feature bird-related items-including art, birdhouses, and books-generously contributed by community members. Attendees will also have the opportunity to hear Kevin speak about his brave, hands-on experience, from climbing tall pines to securing nests.

Additionally, we extend our heartfelt thanks to other local heroes like Beth Weir, who rescued an injured pelican now joyfully reunited with its siblings on Bird Island, and Janis Parker, whose unique pontoon boat captures stunning images for our special birding guide. Rich Ranieri also deserves recognition for his innovative problem-solving contributions. Together, these efforts embody the spirit of community action and the profound impact of caring for our local wildlife.
