This annual event celebrating Maine’s North Woods ties to Wabanaki people & writer Henry David Thoreau’s three canoe trips, two of which were launched from Greenville on Moosehead Lake with Penobscot guides.
OUR MISSION: To encourage the understanding, appreciation, and stewardship of Maine’s unique cultural and natural heritage; To inspire spiritual renewal in the North Woods for all Maine residents and visitors.
The 2026 Annual Thoreau-Wabanaki Trail Festival runs July 22-27.
Engage first-hand with Penobscot Nation cultural leaders. Explore the magnificent woods and waters of the Moosehead region with experts in their fields. Day and evening programs provide a rare chance to connect with North Woods cultural heritage and learn about its natural landscape. Two of naturalist writer Thoreau’s three trips with Penobscot guides launched from Moosehead Lake and shaped his American classic, “The Maine Woods.” For details, see: thoreauwabanaki.org.
